To open this blog I’m writing about my search for an SUV. I recently had a child and bending down to get her in and out of our cars was just not working. I think about the fourth time I threw my back out I had had it. So, it was time to look for an SUV.
These were my requirements; does it fit me being at the top of the list.
1. The seat must provide thigh support as close to my knees as possible, this pretty much makes it so it has to be at least a 5 way adjustable seat.
2. I want my legs to have enough room and still be able to move the seat back a little. Maxing out the seats backward ability limits fine adjustments on a long trip.
3. Once the seat is adjusted I must be able to make a fist and put it on the top of my head. This to me means enough headroom.
4. There must be enough space behind my seat for a car seat or a normal person to sit.
Not too much to ask right? Well let me tell you, it wasn’t easy. So here’s what I found.
I looked at just about everything. A very surprising and disappointing discovery was the American SUV’s like the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Tahoe, Traverse, GMC Acadia etc failed on the head room. I thought American cars were big!? There was very little thigh support, the seats had to go all the way back and I could feel my hair brushing the head liner on each of the above mentioned.
BMW X5
Next up was the BMW X5. I have a friend that is 6’ 3” that fit in his with a fists room above his head. However, when I 6’4” tried it, there was no head room. All other aspects did pass however. This is an SUV I would recommend you try if you’re in the 6’2” to 6’5” range as your torso may be shorter etc.
Buick Enclave
Buick Enclave: Lots of space and a BIG midsize SUV. All aspects passed for me. But, I couldn’t get over the high price for an American car. Plus it’s an acquired taste for looks in my opinion. This could be an option for anyone over 6’4”.
Audi Q7: All aspects passed, but the head room just barely. With my fist on top of my head, my knuckles did graze the liner. It has plenty of space behind, lots of thigh support and room to go back more. I felt just a little squished up top and long term I would not have enjoyed this SUV.
Audi Q7
Finally the Mercedes ML: Holy spacious cockpit batman! Excellent thigh support, lots of extra backward movement available and two, yes, two fists worth of extra head room. My eyes are at a comfortable level looking through the windshield. The back of the front seats have knee space cut-outs for extra leg space in the back seat. I could put a child seat in the middle of the back seat and still have my seat all the back. Given the quality of the build, standard options and amazing comfort. This was the winner for me!
Mercedes ML
I always enjoy getting into the ML and I actually feel small when sitting in the cockpit. This as a tall man is rare. Getting my child or anything out of the car requires a lot less bending over for sure. They come standard with lots of options and the build quality is excellent. So, if your tall and looking for an SUV, you gotta try the ML!
P.S. I also own a VW Passat. This car meets all my requirements as well with extra room to go back more if needed. My eyes look through the windshield just a little too high, but I tried many 4 door sedans that failed before choosing the Passat.
